Heart, Courage, Determination. Those are three words that you want from an athlete. Those three words signifies that a player will give everything he has for his coach and team. Those three words describes Wekiva High guard/forward Cornell Gunter.

Going into the 2009 season Wekiva guard D’Andre Bullard was a relatively unknown prospect. Unlike many of the top players in his area, Bullard didn’t have any Varsity experience and wasn’t expected to play a major role. But with a solid junior campaign and an excellent summer, Bullard has proven that he is one of the better players in the Central Florida area.

Built as the most anticipated finals match-up in the championship brackets, the Jacksonville Arlington Country Day Apaches played against the Orlando Christian Prep Warriors for the1A state championship. With seven state championships between the two teams over the past seven years, the Orlando Christian Prep Warriors were able to hold off a late charge by ACD to win the 1A state title.

Saturday night’s game between St. Petersburg Lakewood and Ft. Myers Green Wave was built as the top match-up in the Tampa Bay Area. With both teams vying for a spot in the state’s final four, the game lived up to its billing.

This past weekend, 84 for 32 Hoops hosted their second Reebok Headliner camp in Jacksonville Florida. The camp is designed to showcase some of the top underclassmen in the state, and it gives an opportunity for the top players of the camp to compete at Reebok University.

The Gainesville Hurricanes boys basketball team had to wait one year to erase memories of last year’s final four performance. The Hurricanes lost in the 5A state semifinal game to eventual state champions Ft. Lauderdale Dillard, then proceeded to lose their coach. The one thing they didn’t lose was their focus as the Hurricanes completed their quest winning the 5A state championship over the Clearwater Tornadoes 53-46.

Pine Crest senior forward Ed Waite, predicted a 15 point victory against Orlando Jones in Friday’s 3A state championship final. He said that because of the way his team had prepared all year. Well for once he was wrong. They actually won by 16 as the Ft. Lauderdale Pine Crest Panthers repeated as 3A state champions with a dominating 60-44 victory over the Orlando Jones High Tigers.

The second semifinal of the class 6A championship featured a rematch of two familiar foes as the Orlando Olympia Titans faced off against the Winter Park Wildcats.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, FloridaProspects.com held its annual MKL Classic at Orlando Jones High School this past weekend. There were eight games spread over Friday and Saturday evenings. Other commitments kept us away from Friday night’s action but we had circled this event on our calendars several months ago and made sure that we were there on Saturday.
