Kathleen's Defense Stops the Hurricanes

In front of over 2,000 fans, Lakeland Kathleen proved to the rest of the state that they are more than just an offensive team as they shutout Bradenton Manatee 13-0 in a non district match-up.

Both teams came in peaking at the right time of the year. Manatee was a riding a five game winning streak, while Kathleen hadn’t lost a game since they’re opener against Lake Gibson.

Early on it looked like Bradenton Manatee would have there way with the Red Devils as they were able to move up and down the field in the first half behind the running of Shawn Williams and Nick Roehl. The duo finished the game with over 150 yards rushing in the game. Manatee failed to produce any points though missing two field goals in the first half leaving the game tied at halftime.

“I’ve been telling my team all year long that defense is what makes a team a championship team.” Coach Armstrong said. “Our offense wasn’t clicking tonight but we were able to get a victory over a good football team. This win will only help us with the rest of our season as we know we can win even when our offense isn’t clicking on all cylinders.”

Behind big passing plays from Dominique Davis to T.J. Lawrence of 32 and 33 yards, Kathleen was able to drive down the field the second half and kicked two field goals. However the game was still in doubt until Red Devils running back Terrell Colson broke open a 44-yard touchdown run to with less than three minutes left to put the game away.

“Our defense really step up today and we proved that we are a balance team who can beat you with our offense or our defense.” Kathleen talented junior T.J. Lawrence said. “We read in the paper that we were considered an underdog and we just used that as motivation to show everyone how good of a team we have at Kathleen.”

Kathleen will have next week off as they prepare for there season ending game against top ranked Lakeland High.

“We have looked forward to playing Lakeland all year long. I know everyone will be ready for the game and I know our team will be ready.” Lawrence said.
