After a long 2012 season of having to watch football from the sidelines Jacksonville
Ribault rising senior DJ Gillins is poised for his senior campaign with a new
team and repaired ACL.
"I got hurt in the first game of the season against Bishop Snyder
after throwing only two passes for 54yds and a touchdown," said
Gillins.."I'm ready to get back to the business of playing football and
I've worked extremely hard to be ready for the fall season."
Gillins is a 6-3 195lb signal caller who runs the 40yd dash in the 4.5
-4.6 range. He can beat you with his legs but it's his pocket presence
that he feels is his best asset as a player. A true leader, he is the
first one to practice and the last one to leave.
"When I tore my ACL last
year I knew it was going to take faith and dedication to get back for this up
coming season. I can relate to what RG3 has went through now. I pattern my game
after RG3 and Teddy Bridgewater because
those two guys had to overcome injuries in order to be there for their
team."
DJ Gillins stepped on the scene as a freshman three years ago for
Eagleview passing for 2188yds, 22Tds 15Ints.
His Sophomore year he improved his numbers passing for 2667 yards with 31
touchdowns, and added five rushing touchdowns
Many felt like if he would've landed at a bigger school with more talent
his numbers would be record breaking, therefore he transferred to Ribault
high school for his senior year.
"I loved my time at Eaglesview but we just lacked depth and talent
at the skill positions which now at Ribault we have more than enough to go
around", said Gillins.
DJ is already qualified through the NCAA which he has a 3.3 core GPA and
was originally committed to Texas Tech, but due to Tommy Tuberville & staff
leaving he reopened his commitment and chose Wisconsin.
"After coach Tommy Tuberville and staff left I felt like they left
me hanging, so I took a long hard look at Wisconsin. The lineman they have are
big and athletic, the campus is beautiful, I like the Grad school they have
there also plus the way they play the game. Tyjuan Deal told me to hop on board because he
would be protecting me, so I'm a Badger now"
DJ is the son of a coach so he contributes that to his passion of
playing football. He has also attended many passing camps notably the Elite 11
in which he faired quite well. His goals for his senior year at Ribault high is
to lead his team to the playoffs, while getting some of his teammates
opportunistic chances to get recruited to colleges.
"We will not be under the radar long because we have a group of
talented guys. My knee is a 100%, I'm ready and we are preparing everyday to be
successful this year. Watch out for the Jacksonville
Ribault Trojans this year “ Gillins said.
Florida Prospects will keep you posted on the progress of DJ Gillins
